Minutes of Churches Together Meeting 28th September 2017

Present: Rev. Philip Musindi (Chairman), Anne Dickinson (Secretary), Birgit Wilson (Joint Secretary), St. Andrew’s Church; Isabel Tittensor (Treasurer), Queen’s Road Baptist; Rev. Jan Durrans, St. Peter’s Anglican Church; Gill Durrant, Society of Friends; Judith Sturgis, The Vale Church; Ted Keeping, Pauline Fullerton, Holy Trinity Church; Clare Heseldine, Our Lady Star of the Sea; Malcolm Cowell, Brian Macphee, both St. Peter’s Baptist Church.

  1. The meeting opened with prayers and Philip thanked everyone for their contribution to our church life in Broadstairs. We all said the Lord’s Prayer before continuing our meeting.

Philip welcomed us and said it was especially good to see Birgit following her accident. Birgit said that she is progressing well and is on the road to recovery.

  1. Apologies: Pamela Hancock, ; Daniel Monaghan, both St. Peter’s Anglican Church; Father Dominic Fenton, Holy Trinity Church; Clive Graham, Harvest Church; Marjorie Dobson, The Methodist Church

  1. The minutes of the last meeting were proposed by Brian and seconded by Birgit and carried.

  2. Treasurer’s Report

We have a balance of in excess of £500 but we have decided that in order to cover any future costs, we will ask for subscriptions to be paid, but at no increase, ie.£25 for congregations of 50 or less, £50 for 50-100, £100 for 100-150 & £150 for those with congregations of 150+.

We decided that once every two years is acceptable and letters will be sent out after Christmas.

  1. Matters arising (not covered elsewhere)

Christian Aid Week 14/05-20/05/17: The overall total sent to Christian Aid was: £5,433-53.
This was made up of: £3,478-53 (House to House collection); £1,198-70 (Pew collections)
£756-33 (Fund raising efforts). Judith said that the overall result of Christian Aid giving was down on last year but still good, considering there were four participating Churches. She thanked all who participated. Jan commented that in her former parish of Chislehurst, envelopes were delivered to people’s homes, with an accompanying letter requesting giving by bank donation.

Thanet Community Gospel Concert 09/07/17: We found out shortly before the concert date that the Town Council had – apparently – not received our booking for the bandstand. The venue was switched to QRB who had offered to accommodate us in the event adverse weather conditions. It took a lot of work and effort to re-advertise the event; Clive had done a fantastic job designing the poster which was delivered to various hotels and venues. Clive also arranged an alternative format to the concert, suitable to the new venue, bearing in mind that the concert took place in the Auditorium, QRB’s prayer and worship space. The concert itself was very well received by those who attended. Birgit received letters of thanks from the Band Leader and the RNLI, who raised around £150.00.

  1. Christmas Services

It was decided after discussion that we would not publish Christmas service leaflets, but use the website plus posters in the town. Birgit is going to ask Clive Graham to help design a suitable poster. (Update 03/10: Clive has agreed to design the poster). We also thought of how to celebrate Christmas as ‘Churches Together’. Jan will investigate the possibility of singing carols outside Tesco, Westwood and collecting for Christian Aid. A provisional date of Thursday 14th December 2017, from 4.30 to 5.30 pm has been booked. We will use the Christmas banner to identify us as ‘Churches Together in Broadstairs & St Peters’.

If Tesco are not able to accommodate us, we will approach local nursing homes, possibly Maurice House. More details will follow in due course. (Update 04/10: Tesco have agreed to us singing, pending paperwork to be signed)
